Our two podcast hosts connect over a shared passion in this unique exploration of television's greatest injustices. Catherine and Andrew dive into the world of brilliant shows canceled after just one season, examining why these gems deserved more time to shine.

Their journey begins with Wonderfalls, Bryan Fuller's quirky 2004 masterpiece starring Caroline Dhavernas as a gift shop clerk who receives mysterious messages from animal figurines. Despite creative brilliance and a stellar cast including Lee Pace and William Sadler, Fox aired just four episodes before pulling the plug, leaving nine episodes that most American viewers never saw.

The hosts unpack Fuller's impressive career trajectory from Wonderfalls to Pushing Daisies and Star Trek Discovery, noting his Whedon-esque tendency to carry favorite actors across projects. They examine what made Wonderfalls special, its connection to Fuller's other works, and why network decisions sometimes tragically cut short television's most innovative stories.

Beyond Wonderfalls, Catherine and Andrew preview other planned deep dives into beloved one-season wonders like Firefly, Julie and the Phantoms, Freaks and Geeks, and Constantine. Their personal dynamic adds warmth and authenticity to a podcast that serves both as entertainment and cultural preservation. Share your own suggestions for shows that deserved a second season - the hosts are eager to expand their exploration of TV's most painful premature cancellations.

Andrew

welcome everyone to seeking season two seeking season two. Seeking season two. Take two. We started this once before, then we got divorced, then we got divorced. Now we're now we're rebooting, we're doing a reboot of seeking season two, so now it's back it's seeking season. Two's season, two season two of seeking season two. Yeah, but this is just the trailer of seeking season two, so it's not even it's the seeking trailer of Seeking Season 2. So it's not even it's the Seeking trailer of Season 2 of Seeking Season 2?.

Catherine

Desperately Seeking.

Andrew

Season, desperately Seeking Season 2? Yeah, yes. So this podcast is all about those fantastic TV shows that only got one season and really deserved at least another season, if not, if not more.

Catherine

Like Firefly.

Andrew

I knew you were going to bring that one up. That's. That's the one that everybody, I think, brings up first is is firefly accurate right, what else? What are some of the other ones I'm trying to remember?

Catherine

we have a whole giant list of oh well, you, let you your pick julie and the phantoms oh my god, I mean there was like a whole online campaign to get a second season of julie and the Phantoms. Oh my God, I mean there was like a whole online campaign to get a second season of Julie and the Phantoms because that show was fantastic and it ended on a cliffhanger, and now we'll never know.

Andrew

Don't you? I? I hate when they do that the cliffhangers and then it's like not knowing they're going to get a season two and they do a cliffhanger and it just really just messes with the whole audience. Yeah, but some of the other things on this so firefly obviously is one that that everyone talks about for me, freaks and geeks- yeah I'm still shocked that only got one season, my so-called life yeah, oh, that's another really good right there's some good ones on here, but we are going to talk about in our season one two it's technically season one technically season one.

Catherine

We only got through one episode of we never well, because oh did that never get, posted.

Andrew

Never even got aired oh well, it might have gotten aired, but what happened was I was doing the free, the free version of buzzsprout, and after 90 days the episode's deleted, so they don't even exist anymore after 180 days, we got divorced wow, so this is season one, the, the new season one, because the other season doesn't exist. It's it's like the unaired pilot. Yes, there's the unaired pilot of Seeking Season 2 podcast that you will never find except on my external hard drive, because we can't find it either.

Andrew

No, it's on my external hard drive. I have the episode. We just never aired. It Got it. So we are going to talk about? Well, let's talk about ourselves first. So why don't you introduce yourself to the audience? I'm Catherine. Hi Catherine.

Catherine

Hello, who are you?

Andrew

I'm your ex-husband.

Catherine

Yeah, you are. Do you have a name?

Andrew

My name is Andrew. Oh, hello Andrew, hello Catherine.

Catherine

How's it?

Andrew

going, it's going great.

Catherine

Awesome. Glad to hear it.

Andrew

Yes, so we are your hosts. No-transcript. Motion picture, moving image, silver screen, small screen, all those things, things I can watch in my living room. Sunscreen, not sunscreen.

Catherine

I'm a fan of sunscreen I mean, I'm a fan of sunscreen but I'm not a fan of being at the beach or anything. So you know, not needing sunscreen, not generally. I'm an indoor.

Andrew

I'm an indoor cat there you go, so we. So we are going to this season. Season one, we're going to talk about the amazing show that I actually have never seen. Did you watch any of it?

Catherine

I don't think. Well, maybe.

Andrew

I don't remember. I remember being on.

Catherine

I feel like I've.

Andrew

I vaguely feel like I've seen some of it.

Catherine

Yeah, I vaguely feel like I've seen some of it. Yeah, Like well, we just watched the trailer for it and the whole like hearing things, something telling her to do things, does seem very, very familiar.

Introducing Wonderfalls and Bryan Fuller

Andrew

Yeah, I know I didn't watch the whole series, but I may have caught bits and pieces of it. Yes, so Wonderfalls. Let's talk a little bit about Wonderfalls. Yes, created by I don't remember his name. Brian Fuller.

Catherine

Thank you.

Andrew

So Brian Fuller is the creator of Wonderfalls, creator of one of my other favorite shows which did get more than one season Pushing Daisies, great show. Also the creator of Star Trek Discovery.

Catherine

Yeah, I had no idea.

Andrew

Had no idea. No idea, I mean, I knew, but I mean like I didn't put two and two together, that like that brian fuller.

Catherine

So you thought it might be the other brian fuller you know the the other, brian fuller the other, brian fuller, you know sure brian q fuller exactly no, but like I was such.

Andrew

I mean we were both big fans of pushing daisy, such a such a great show. Yeah, and lee pace, the, the lead actor on pushing daisies, was in wonderfall. So we will. We will get to talk about that handsome, handsome little devil.

Catherine

I was going to say and uh, is is, and was very hot yeah, he is.

Andrew

He is a good looking, good looking dude and the lead actress, caroline.

Catherine

Deverna.

Andrew

Deverna, who is in Hannibal, which is another Brian Fuller production. So he's another one that brings along his favorite actors and actresses from previous shows into newer things.

Catherine

Which is very Joss Whedon of him. But unlike joss whedon, I don't think brian fuller has been canceled I don't think so, not yet, at least I hope not.

Notable Cast and Connections

Andrew

No, because he just did star trek discovery. So, yeah, he's still, he's still a-okay, he's okay, he's okay, so wonderful. So there, there's a whole bunch of different people that show up in here. I was saying Tracy Toms, yep, I was reading something that maybe Nick Offerman shows up in an episode or something Interesting. So there's going to be some. I think there's some random people that just show up in episodes, I mean because this is 2004. So this is 20 years ago, 20 years ago. Yeah, now that we're talking that, this show has been on.

Catherine

God, my youth, my knees were so great back then.

Andrew

Right yeah, the good old days.

Catherine

Yeah.

Andrew

So I'm trying to think of yeah, who else is in this? Oh, who was the other one I was just talking about, the one that's married to Emerson, Michael Emerson.

Catherine

Yeah, I know. Now I'm not going to remember her name anymore.

Andrew

Terry Preston.

Catherine

Thank you. I had it immediately when you asked the last time and now.

Andrew

I'm just like huh, I know, that's why I went to you with this one.

Catherine

I mean, I literally watched Elspeth this morning.

Andrew

I'm like you just completely blanked this time. I'm like, okay, so, yeah, so she's in some episodes there. There's a bunch of other people. Let me, I had it up. I want to see who else is in this. Yeah, tracy toms. Um, yeah, lee pace. Obviously william sadler who's that?

Catherine

oh, I do know who that is. He was on roswell, wasn't? He Was William Sadler on.

Andrew

He was. I remember him best. So a couple of things. What else is I know? The one thing I'm going to mention, I know what you're going to mention. What's that Because?

Catherine

it's going to be. You sank my battleship.

Andrew

No, that's not what I was going to say. Oh, he was one of the guards in, or he was one of the guards in, or a prisoner. He was one of the prisoners in Shawshank Redemption. William Sadler was in Shawshank Redemption. He also played Death in two Bill and Ted movies. So good. Yes, he's just fantastic. So he's in this. Let's see who else is. I mean, was he?

Catherine

not on Roswell, I thought for sure he was Okay good.

Andrew

He was on Roswell 61 episodes of Roswell 61 episodes. I thought he was a main character.

Catherine

Oh my goodness, yeah, I'm pretty sure he was the dad and a cop and, oh yeah, television Without Pity, formerly Mighty Big TV, formerly Dawson's Rep, referred to him as Pornstache.

Andrew

Pornstache Interesting.

Catherine

Because he had a mustache that porn actors would have.

Andrew

I see, and who else? Some of the other people. Oh, I was saying Jewel State shows up for four episodes apparently. So there's a couple other good, couple other good, good, uh good people showing up in there and we'll see who else shows up in these episodes. It only got 13 episodes, so it was probably, was it?

Catherine

I'd have to do some more research and we'll do that for for episode one, but maybe it's a mid-season replacement uh, there are seven unaired episodes on the dvd set that arrived here so it might have gotten a full season order, and then they didn't air the whole season Because it seems like there are 20 episodes. Are there 20 episodes?

The Premature Cancellation Story

Andrew

Okay, so there were 13 episodes Yep, only four were aired. From what I recall reading, there was only four aired. Yep, that seems right, because this says including nine that never aired right, but then I think apparently some some station up in canada like picked it up and like aired the whole season up in canada, if I recall correctly, but in in the uS, yeah, there was only four episodes aired, which was really, really disappointing. Criminal Wonderfall is the complete viewer collection. I'm really looking forward to all 13 episodes, including nine that never aired.

Catherine

Which would be consistent with four having aired.

Andrew

Correct. That's math. That is math. Boom. Who says you're not good at math? Everyone, I say A documentary. We'll have to watch the documentary.

Catherine

And there's all sorts of commentary, I believe.

Andrew

Oh, yeah, oh, and a music video, hello. Oh, this should be fun.

Catherine

Yeah.

Andrew

Excellent. So we're we're going to watch all 13 episodes, comment on every single one of them and we will go from there.

Catherine

Yeah.

Other One-Season Wonders Worth Watching

Andrew

You know I would. I would love to hear other people's opinions on shows that they feel got canceled after one season and deserve a second shot. And we've got a whole long list. Clerks, the animated series.

Catherine

Constantine.

Andrew

Constantine.

Catherine

That's a great show.

Andrew

Yeah, moonlight.

Catherine

The Lone Gunman.

Andrew

The Lone Gunman. I really want to watch that series again. I mean they were the spinoff from the X-Files Because they were featured in many episodes of the X-Files and finally got their own series and unfortunately it didn't quite take. Forever, Ooh, I always thought Forever got more than one season. I felt like it was around longer than that. It felt like Forever it did.

Catherine

I thought forever got more than one season, like I felt like it was around longer than that. It felt like forever it did. And it's funny because I I just saw um and I can't possibly pronounce his name correctly, but joan griffo is he welsh.

Andrew

He is welsh and welsh names are difficult, but he was just on elsbeth last week. Oh, was he really? Yes, oh, very cool.

Catherine

Yeah, elsbeth is great because every week is a different very well-known actor in the murderer role.

Andrew

In the murderer role, but he was actually not the murderer.

Catherine

He witnessed the murder, he witnessed the murder.

Andrew

Mm-hmm Interesting. And who was the person that just? Was that the one that you sent me? It was Rob Mc, and who was the person that just is? It? Was that the one that you sent me, it was rob mcclure.

Catherine

The one was that he's the one that died. Yeah, and, and matthew broderick was the murderer excellent yes um, yeah, I mean rob mcclure isn't well enough known, I guess to be the murderer.

Andrew

He was the victim well, that's, that's all right. It's a step up from svu death by his cat allergy.

Invitation for Listener Suggestions

Andrew

Oh, yeah, um, other things on our list, the tick um battlestar galactica, the original um, almost. Yeah, there's a bunch of on here, but I would love to you know in in the comments on these episodes. Please respond, let us know what other shows you loved that deserve a second season and and maybe we will feature them on on this podcast. But but stay tuned for the official episode one of season one, not including the unaired pilot of seeking season two, um, which will maybe show up someday. But check it out. And again we'll be here, catherine and Andrew talking about Wonder Falls. Yay, we'll see you soon, everyone. Bye, bye.
