When a quarter tossed in a fountain brings Jaye face-to-face with local legend Millie Marcus (played with Southern charm by Golden Girls' Rue McClanahan), she inadvertently uncovers a decades-old deception at the heart of Niagara Falls history. The Barrel Bear muse leads Jaye down a rabbit hole of mistaken identities, exposing that Millie wasn't actually the first American woman to survive going over the falls in a barrel – that honor belongs to the flannel-wearing, no-nonsense Vivian (Oscar winner Louise Fletcher).
What follows is a brilliantly crafted exploration of identity and the fear of being trapped. Written by television heavyweights Tim Minear and Bryan Fuller, the episode masterfully parallels Jaye's anxiety about her future with the lives of both Millie and Vivian – one living a glamorous lie, the other unable to escape the shadow of her stolen accomplishment. Meanwhile, Jaye finds herself at odds with Mahandra, who's determined to preserve the myth that defines their hometown, revealing deeper tensions in their friendship as Jaye struggles to share her supernatural reality.
Eric's storyline adds another dimension as he grapples with calls from his past life, eventually making peace with his new identity in a symbolic gesture at the falls. The episode delivers some of the series' sharpest dialogue ("How long have you been using the Republican Party as a lesbian dating service?") alongside genuinely poignant moments, culminating in a funeral scene that cleverly resolves the central conflict while honoring both women's stories.
Watching this episode, you'll understand why many fans consider it one of Wonderfalls' strongest offerings. Its exploration of authenticity versus pretense, combined with stellar guest performances and meaningful character development, showcases everything that made this short-lived series so special. Episode 7: Barrel Bear Overview
Speaker 1Yes, you did, it's the best. Anyway, on to seeking season two podcast. Episode seven of season one barrel bear barrel bear.
Speaker 2I like the barrel bear.
Speaker 1I was hoping he'd come back around barrel bear barrel bear is is has been around for a while, yeah, and, interestingly enough, has spoken. It's not even like. This is the first time that Barrel Bear has spoken to.
Speaker 2Jay, I think this is the third time. Right, at least the third time, because it was very early on Barrel Bear makes an appearance in almost every episode.
Speaker 1I think Crime Dog it didn't.
Speaker 2but If they're not in Wonderfalls, he's not going to Well, but she has one in her trailer now too. Well, she does now. Well, she did a couple episodes ago, did she? Yeah, he was part of, wasn't he also singing about the bottles of beer on the wall?
Speaker 2but remember that was the one episode that was filmed last got it but played early, so that may be why the barrel bear is there, you know the continuity is I was reading an AV club review where they talked about how, like nice, where they talked about how it didn't matter that they were airing them out of order because all of the initial episodes were like standalones, and I'm like, how do you figure?
Speaker 1wow, that's because I disagree exactly. Av club let's, let's, let's get the people from av club on here. Let's have, let's have a group discussion.
Speaker 2Let's fight them, let's, we will fight you.
Speaker 1We are's fight them, we will fight you. We are calling you out. Av Club.
Speaker 2Wait, let me find the person's name.
Speaker 1All right, here we go. While you do that, I'm going to start the introduction of episode seven, barrel Bear.
Speaker 2Okay, I'm going to pet Mulder here because he's standing next to me, looking for attention, either Chapel or Chappelle, I'm coming for you. Excellent you, I'm coming for you excellent, you've been called out Les the last time Les wrote for AV Club was in 2021, so I don't know. I'm going to google Les and see where he is now please do so anyway.
Speaker 1So this episode, barrel Bear, which is the 7th episode in the series, not necessarily filmed that way, or this one, again, not aired on US television. Jamie Babbitt is the director. Interestingly enough, jamie Babbitt also directed nine episodes of only murders in the building. Oh, I know, I, I know that show.
Speaker 2Yes, exactly I love that show. Uh, I, I'm sorry, I was corrected. Les chapel was still writing for av club in 2024 oh, okay, but that's the only place I can find him, because that also seems to be the name of an English footballer and manager born in 1947.
Speaker 1Fascinating. Maybe they're one and the same.
Speaker 2Also a musical artist, second career.
Speaker 1So this episode written by one of your favorite people, tim Minear, yeah, and Brian Fuller, huh. So this is like an OG kind of episode written. Maybe that's why I liked it so much, because it was written by those two and we talked about the guest stars yeah, rue McC. About the guest stars yeah, rue McClanahan.
Speaker 2Yes, and Louise Fletcher.
Speaker 1You may recognize the name Rue McClanahan, Not only from her starring role in this episode of Wonderfalls which was probably the pinnacle of her career certainly not as blanche devereaux no, no, that was a much lesser known. Much, I mean hard, I mean come on who's who's watched that show golden? Come on who's who's seen golden Girls? Okay, everybody, literally everyone.
Speaker 1Literally everyone who does not love Ruma Clannahan? I mean, blanche is just probably one of my favorites. Yeah, I mean, betty White is Betty White. Sure, she's in another strata, but Ruma Clannahan is definitely funny. And, yes, louise Fletcher, also known as Nurse Ratched yes From One.
Speaker 2Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.
Speaker 1And not just from One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.
Speaker 2Oscar winner Oscar winner who struggled in her career, after One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest because she was so convincing as Nurse Ratched that she was typecast yeah.
Speaker 1I loved her in this episode, as did I. I thought she was fantastic Agreed, so we will get into that a little bit more. So let's talk about the synopsis. What is the story of this episode?
Millie Marcus vs. Vivian: The Falls Legend
Speaker 2Well, Blanche Devereaux, whose name is actually. Wait, what was her last name? It's Millie Marcus, millie, marcus, millie. Marcus, now that's alliteration yes, millie Marcus Um. She is known as the first person who went over the falls in a barrel, the first woman who went over the first American woman to go over the falls in a barrel over the barrel and live very important. Very important.
Speaker 1That is the punchline asterisk to that, to that, to that, uh, uh, that claim to fame.
Speaker 2So she becomes the focus of Jay's good doing, good deeding.
Speaker 1Deeding done, good deeding done, good deedy do Zippity doo da Anyway.
Speaker 2Should we record these after work? Maybe not, we haven't even been drinking.
Speaker 1I know my God yeah.
Speaker 2So she's outside, she throws a quarter into the fountain.
Speaker 1Yes, she Return it to her. Or bring it? Yeah, return it to her. Is that what? Yeah, I think so, think so.
Speaker 2Barrel bear says yeah, so of course she assumes she's returning the quarter to blanche and she goes out and pulls the quarter out of the fountain yes gets a ticket and then, and then, blanche disappears.
Speaker 1Yep, and we're just going to call her blanche for oh, she's definitely just blanche just blanche. Yeah, um so, but yeah, blanche is nowhere to be found after jay reaches in and books out the quarter, pulls out the quarter, but then she yes, she gets a ticket for for doing that. So is that when she because this was one of my favorite moments Is that when she pushes the barrel bear into the fountain?
Speaker 2Yes.
Speaker 1And you just hear the barrel bear gurgling. Yes, she's talking, Poor thing. She's so frustrated with the barrel bear that she's. She knows she's trying to do good, but then she gets punished for it by by getting a ticket?
Speaker 2Yep, she's getting a fine. Yes.
Speaker 1And that one that nicely wraps up at the end of the episode as well, which I thought was good. Yep, absolutely.
Speaker 2Getting another ticket.
Speaker 1Glittering, so it's interesting. So the whole kind of storyline to this episode is that Millie Rue, Blanche, all those names Blanche is the one claiming to be the first American woman to go over the falls and live.
Speaker 1And everyone believes that to be the truth, everyone. Because because they, they, they, they show the whole backstory as to what happened, um, what? What happened to cause that? Um, deception? Yep, but there's another woman who claims that she is actually the woman who went over in the barrel and lived. Yes, so, and that's Louise Fletcher's character. So, so nurse ratchet goes over the falls. So now they're just nurse ratchet and Blanche Uh correct.
Speaker 2Nurse ratchet goes over the falls, yes, while she's recovering from having gone over the falls and lived and lived, uh, they swap her with.
Speaker 1Blanche with Blanche, and blanche then stands out there and and goes on to take, takes off her bathing cap, unfurls her luxurious hair and and everyone cheers, yeah that that she has made it over the falls and lived. Yep, and so she. So she's been riding this story for her life Like this is her identity. Yep, there was really nothing else past this. This is just who she was. Now she's kind of faded out of the limelight.
Speaker 2Right. No one really knows or cares who she is or what she has done knows or cares who she is or or what she has done, and so jay thinks that what she has to restore is her fame. So she sets up a book signing at wonderfalls well, it's not a book signing, because there's no, oh no, that's right, it's an autograph, a photo.
Speaker 1Autograph photos, yes um, no one's interested, no one's interested. So so let's talk about the, the main storyline here. So let's break it down. Um, break it down, break it down. Oh so it was. When was it? When was the the altercation, the, the, the the conflict? Was it when they were at the CLAW setting up for the CLAW meeting?
Speaker 2Concerned Ladies of America West.
Jaye and Mahandra's Opposing Missions
Speaker 1Concerned Ladies of America West East Coast Chapter, east Coast Chapter. So Darren and Sharon are both members of the Concerned Ladies of the American West East Coast Chapter. I think it's just of America West Of America West, yeah, yeah yeah, not of the American West, correct, of America West, america West Got it, because that's why I think it's just Concerned Ladies America West Got it.
Speaker 2Concerned Ladies of America West. Concerned Ladies of America.
Speaker 1West East Coast chapter. Got it, got it now Okay, so, anyway. So I think that's when Vivian shows back up, nurse Ratched shows up and starts raising a ruckus.
Speaker 1Isn't, it is that when she comes because she said she wasn't going to buy a ticket to the event- yep so she, she raises a ruckus saying you know how dare you know, I'm really the one that went over the falls, and so this really causes kind of a rift between Jay and Mahandra, right and Eric too. It kind of gets tied into the it's drawn into the whole thing as well.
Speaker 2Yeah, well, I mean, eric seems interested in anything that'll pass the time sure?
Speaker 1um, so so jay and mahondra are on opposite sides. Jay is trying to restore the? Um, what's the word? I'm looking for the, the memory of, kind of restore the memory of Vivian, nurse ratchet to, to, to get her story out there, that she's actually the true, true hero. Yeah, heroine, she's trying to write a wrong. She is. She's trying to write a wrong and just and fix history and make people aware of the fact that a nurse ratchet is the one that went over the falls, the first American woman to go over the falls and live. And Mahondra is determined to preserve the myth that it was Blanche who went over the falls and lived. So they're fighting back and forth trying to do this and mayhem ensues. Blanche finally figures that she's going to. She determines that even at her age she is going to go over the falls and kind kind of make it true that she's. She went over the falls and and lived yeah, except then she doesn't, then she doesn't.
Speaker 1The barrel slipped. Because the barrel slipped and the barrel went over and they assumed she was in there, jay, because jay and nurse ratchet saw the barrel all broken up and assumed that Blanche went over and has perished. And this brings me back to it's a little piece of trivia-ish sort of thing, but what I thought was really funny. Did you pick up that Mahondra said that her father was the one responsible for fishing corpses out of the river after they've gone over the falls?
Speaker 2Yep.
Speaker 1I was like that's a funny tidbit, like that's a funny like character development tidbit that like I just really enjoyed because that's the kind of stuff that I like.
Speaker 1I like this, this weird kind of character, um, but you, you've never met the father right you've never met mahandra's father, um, but now all you know about him is that he was the. He's the, the fisher of corpses out of the river after they've gone over the falls. Great, great little, great little tidbit of information, um, what are, what are some of them? So that that's the main plot line what, what? So? What are? What are your thoughts on on how that, how that played out?
Speaker 2I enjoyed that. Um, you know they have blanche come swanning in, yes, every bit the southern charm like she's.
Speaker 1She's very, very it's. It's like she's playing blanche, it's like she's playing blanche.
Speaker 2Is she's not as saucy as? Blanche no but she's still a celebrity in her own.
Speaker 1Yeah.
Speaker 2She's a legend in her own mind.
Speaker 1Right, I feel like she's like a silent movie star, yeah, like kind of kind of thing, like that's and she has that kind of what did they? Keep referring to.
Speaker 2Vivian, as like flannel.
Speaker 1Well, she's the flannel, she's got the man shirt and man pants and baggy men's, baggy men's pants or something like that.
Speaker 2Oh my God, um, yeah, yeah, I liked. I liked the story, I liked the whole switcheroo that happened and, um, I liked the parallel that they drew to Vivian kind of being stuck in Niagara falls and Jay's fear of that same thing happening to her Right, which I think is part of why even though it's what the muses want, it's why Jay goes so hardcore toward trying to help Vivian get out, because that's the life she fears she'll have.
Speaker 1Vivian. Vivian's kind of been trapped in in Niagara Falls because Falls, because of this, and I think Jay sees a lot of herself in Vivian, yeah, and, like you said, that's kind of her motivation for helping her get out of town. Yeah, which I thought was interesting, because then it also ties into Eric as well. Yes, yeah, which I thought was interesting, because then it also ties into Eric as well, because, because they talk about Eric, new Eric and old Eric, right.
Speaker 2Eric, ignoring every phone call that's coming in.
Speaker 1Yes.
Speaker 2From his old boss, from his family, from his wife.
Speaker 1Well, he's not ignoring them. Mahondra was answering the phone.
Speaker 2Mahondra was answering taking messages.
Speaker 1It's like your mother called. She's very concerned about you.
Trapped in Niagara Falls
Speaker 1So Mahondra is answering his phone but it ties back into Eric because they talk about him now being he's got like a new start in Wonder Falls in Niagara Falls, right, but he's like my wife picked this place, right. So it's almost like he's trapped there as well, right there as well, right, like he's. He kind of got abandoned there by his, his wife and the fooling around with the Bellman, yeah, and so now he's trapped as well, but he's he's struggling trying to figure out which life he wants.
Speaker 2Yeah, and I think, I think Jay's trying to figure out the same thing. Sure, and I think even Mahindra, yeah, and I think I think Jay's trying to figure out the same thing. Sure, and I think even Mahindra, yeah, she likes it. They're better than Jay.
Speaker 1Yeah.
Speaker 2But I still don't think it's necessarily where she wants to be longterm. It's just where she is now.
Speaker 1Right.
Speaker 2And kind of where she's always been Sure.
Speaker 1She's kind of the townie of.
Speaker 2Yeah.
Speaker 1And she's never I don't think she's ever really left.
Speaker 2Yeah, yeah Because she makes the references to Dartmouth and Jay having gotten out.
Speaker 1Dartmouth, wasn't it Dartmouth? Brown Brown Jay, yes.
Speaker 2Brown, can we do this all in one word Dartmouth.
Speaker 1Nardog.
Speaker 2Circle Center Ball Yep and we've gone off the rails.
Speaker 1We've gone right to Cable Guy, mm-hmm, yes, anyway, gone off the rails, we've gone right to cable guy.
Speaker 2Yes, Anyway, off the rails again some more.
Speaker 1Yes, so I think, I think a lot of people are. It's. It's fascinating because a lot of people are dealing with the same emotion, same issue, in in different ways.
Speaker 2Yeah.
Speaker 1And it's really interesting to see how all that, how they all kind of have a resolution to, to that, yeah, and yet, which I thought was really good- Rue.
Speaker 2Millie Blanche has come back to Niagara Falls because she doesn't have that place in the world, right, so the it's interesting to see the dichotomies. I do think, and probably because this was written by Tim Minear and Brian Fuller, it's a better written episode than a lot of the others. Yeah, um, and you do see kind of the duality of like. Mahandra loves the history of Niagara Falls. That's why she's so obsessed with Millie and what Millie kind of represents, whereas Jay is just looking to escape it and she can't.
Speaker 1I think some of it with Mahandra is that she's just being contrary to Jay Just because, again, because it comes up right at the very end of the episode that Jay doesn't really open up to her anymore.
Speaker 2Which is and we talked about this a little in the last episode heartbreaking, because Jay finally does say, okay, you know how I told you that the inanimate objects are talking to me and they are, and they tell me to do stuff, and blah, blah, blah. And Mahandra's like, well, I'll be here when you're ready to tell me, right, like it was kind of. And also this the one thing this episode really lacked was Aaron. I agree. The one thing this episode really lacked was Aaron, I agree, but I think it just was interesting.
Speaker 2And again, this is a duality. It's not necessarily brought up in this episode, but I think it's interesting to look at that. Aaron just so wholeheartedly believes her, but it's because of something within him, right, and Mahondra just doesn't. And again, I think that's of something within him, right, um, and Mahandra just doesn't. And again, I think that's probably something within her that just, I think she's almost happier hanging onto the idea that, like there's something that Jay isn't telling her, right, rather than I think, the concept that Jay is changing, because there's a lot of references to like when did Jay become the good person? And Mahandra is like the bad person that Jay used to be or the disaffected person that Jay used to be.
Speaker 1Interesting. Hmm, yeah, I mean it's, it really is interesting, I think the the relationship between those two, because I mean some episodes of Mahandra hasn't even been there, yeah, so so it's it's interesting to to see kind of that expanded relationship which I thought, which I thought was really good. But I don't know, I think, you know, I, I think Mahindra is kind of happy with her life.
Speaker 2Ish, I don, I think Mahandra is kind of happy with her life. Ish, I don't think she's a hundred percent happy. I think she wonders what there could be yes, sorry, yes, I think she wonders what there could be for her outside of Niagara Falls.
Speaker 1I think she's well. It's interesting because she's seeing. She's seeing all these people that have left Wonder Falls and have come or Niagara I keep calling it Wonder Falls, keep leaving Niagara Falls and coming back to Niagara Falls.
Speaker 2Right.
Speaker 1And maybe she's, maybe she's wondering what's like you said, what's out there for for?
Speaker 2her.
Speaker 1Right, like what? What? What would happen if she left Niagara Falls? And maybe she's afraid to? Maybe she's afraid to leave, it's safe there and maybe, and maybe that's why she's so determined in saving the history, even though it's wrong.
Speaker 2Yeah.
Speaker 1Because that's, that's all she knows, like that's, that's's, that's her comfort zone, yep, and so she's. If she sees that fall apart, then what does that mean for her right? So it's a big crisis of for for her. Yeah, interesting, um, what are, what are the subplots of this? I think eric and the phone calls yes, eric, and the phone calls um love that band, I think another one, welcome, eric, and the phone calls um to the second stage. Everybody, eric and the phone calls.
Speaker 2The whole claw. Thing.
Speaker 1The claw. Yeah Well, the claw, yes, the claw thing I thought was so funny. It was just again, just another bizarre little tidbit. Oh and then, well, because we're probably going to talk about it in the funniest things, yep, about using the Republican Party as a lesbian dating service.
Speaker 2Yeah. So Jay says how long have you been using the Republican Party as a lesbian dating service? Yeah. So Jay says how long have you been using the Republican party as a lesbian dating?
The Funeral Twist and Closure
Speaker 1service Just great. Yup, Such a, that's such a good line, Again, again, I think I think the writing of this episode was really solid um which was good. I don't. I don't think there was much troublesome.
Speaker 2They were calling her flannel granny.
Speaker 1Flannel granny Wow.
Speaker 2Lovely. There was not a lot of controversy in this episode.
Speaker 1No, there was nothing that I found like downright insulting.
Speaker 2And there's been something in almost every episode up until now, so good job, oh okay, well, I'll talk about this when we get to favorite Okay. So good job, oh okay. Well, I'll talk about this when we get to favorite Okay.
Speaker 1We'll get to that. Yeah, I really liked. I really liked how the episode wrapped up because it tied.
Speaker 2That was very yeah. I was actually initially confused about what they were doing. Were you, yeah, yeah, what so during the funeral? So should we just talk about what it? Is first, and then I'll tell you what I so they so millie, slash rue right, slash blanche um ends up dying of, I guess, a heart attack a stroke something.
Speaker 1It's never not too late, it's not too.
Speaker 2It's never too late, it's not too late, it's never too late. And then she just keels over.
Speaker 1And they have. It's never too late. Because she because, because Millie's character is going to expose the truth she's going to go on this tour with Vivian and tell the truth and tell the truth Right, because she's saying it's not too. She has this. She had this kind of epiphany when, when the barrel went over and she was standing on the side of the falls, realized exactly what Vivian had actually done and how truly important that was. So she was going to let the world know that Vivian was the one that really went over the falls and lived. And again, it's not too late, it's not too late. And then she just keels over and dies before she can go in and rewrite history.
Speaker 2So then we have a funeral scene. Yes, there is an urn up at the front. Yes, there is. There is a pastor, preacher, priest, whoever talking about the deceased.
Speaker 1Yes.
Speaker 2And then they reveal that they are burying or having this funeral for vivian, vivian so funeral is for vivian and I was just super confused until vivian then came out looking all glamorous, right um, dressed as millie exactly, and goes to go on tour. And then the driver realizes oh my goodness, you're the one who went over the falls the first woman to go over the falls and live and asks for an autograph and she starts to sign vivian and she's like, oh, I'm gonna have to work on that that's right.
Speaker 1She goes out as millie. Yeah, so it's fascinating, because I love Jay is just like. She's like yes, I know you have to go out and lie, so you're going out and saying that you're the woman that went over the falls and lived, which you are, but you're saying it as Millie. So you're not she's like. I know it's messy, but it works yeah.
Speaker 1But I love the tie-up at the end when they try to figure out what to do with the ashes. And I thought it was really touching because Millie finally got to go over the falls in a barrel, even though it's the barrel bear's barrel. She's dead at this point, but she gets to go over the barrel, except maybe for an elbow.
Speaker 2She spilled some of the ashes on the register. So maybe everything but an elbow, that's right.
Speaker 1That's right, I forgot. And then so they have that moment, so they tie up Millie's story, giving her some closure even in death, giving her some closure even in death. Eric has the epiphany that he is now Eric, not then Eric, right. And so now Eric is going to stay here and be happy and live his life. And he declares that he likes, he says he likes a lot of things. And then he says to Jay, jay, and I like you.
Speaker 2Yeah, and he flings his phone into the falls.
Speaker 1Yes, as it. As it's ringing, yeah, Maybe they'll call back, but I love, I love how Jay goes. I didn't laugh at when when Eric tells tells her that he likes her.
Speaker 2Yeah.
Speaker 1So it's like. It's like I really am looking forward to seeing where that goes. But they tied up.
Speaker 1So they tied up Vivian, they tied up Millie, they tied up Eric, yep, and then they kind of tie up Jay and Mahondra in that moment that you were talking about earlier when Mahondra was like you know, I'm really hurt, that really hurt that you used to tell me everything and now you've been so kind of shut down and so then Jay just lets it all out there. She's like remember when I told you that wax lion was talking to me? It really talks to me. And, as you said, mahandra was like okay, when you're ready to tell me the truth, I'll be here.
Speaker 2Yeah, the dismissal is just heartbreaking.
Speaker 1Well, she's used to Jane not being open and honest. I guess, and so she's like you just tell me something so absurd. It's like clearly you don't want to tell me, like, so I think I think that's kind of how how Mahindra picks takes it is that okay, you made up something so absurd that I know you really, you really aren't ready to tell me yet.
Speaker 2Yeah.
Speaker 1Well, you didn't just say I'm not ready to tell you or anything like that. You you like, you just want. You went all the way in the opposite direction and and did that. So that's that's how I kind of took it.
Speaker 2Yeah.
Speaker 1All right, so let's talk about. You want to talk about your favorite moments? Yes, okay, hit me with your favorite moments.
Speaker 2Okay, so Millie doing the photo signing? Yes, this is sad. This is sadder than that hooker we saw getting beat up by that other hooker. She says at least a hooker fight would draw a crowd.
Speaker 1I wrote that down somewhere myself. I thought that was such a great one.
Speaker 2That was really funny when she threatens the wax lion she'll stick a wick in his butt, Can you?
Speaker 1say make me a candle.
Speaker 2That was good. Uh, I had the thing about the about, uh, mahondra's father fishing the corpses. Yeah, that was right that was a really interesting tidbit I did also um, like when Alec told Jay he could make sure there's always a place for her at winter falls.
Speaker 1And she's like, oh no, I love. So one of one of my things was I love when, uh, when Millie right near, the right, near the end, right before she dies, she goes. What made me think I could jump, jump the falls. And then from outside you hear Mahandra go a bottle of Merlot, that sounds about right.
Speaker 1Yeah, that's fair, I mean, every, every stupid thing usually starts with, with with significant drinking, so so that was that was pretty par for the course. Like I said, I loved when she kicked with significant drinking, so so that was, that was pretty par for the course. Um, like I said, I loved when she kicked, kicked the barrel bear into the, into the wishing well, yes, um, and he's, he's gurgling as he, as he's falling in um that one. Yeah, and how long have you been using the Republican party as a lesbian dating service?
Speaker 2Another one of my favorite lines the concerned ladies of America West East.
Speaker 1Coast chapter just made me giggle Claw and, like I said, darren and Sharon always making the little hand claw gesture that's like, like that's their little thing to each other, like I wish that they had understood what they wanted the family dynamics to be like earlier on.
Speaker 2Yeah, because I think they could have done a better job from the outset of making them a tight knit but dysfunctional family. Yes, instead of just being so kind of initially unkind and dismissive. Yes, about Jay, I agree. Yeah, because there are parts now where, like, I've really come to like Darren he obviously loves his kids. I agree Because there are parts now where I've really come to like Darren. He obviously loves his kids.
Speaker 1Darren's been a really good character.
Speaker 2And Karen, she puts on airs and oh, she's not going to write a book with Millie, but she does love her kids. She had the meeting. I mean, she took the meeting. She didn't have to do that. So I feel like they've done a much better job in writing. The family.
Speaker 1Yes.
Speaker 2But it took, I'd say, a solid five episodes to get there, Right, and that's unfortunate, because that's right when they canceled it.
Speaker 1Right Now, I feel like the episodes post-cancellation have been far more solid and consistent than what you saw on television.
Speaker 2Yeah, I don't know how they chose those as the ones to air, especially when they were out of order.
Speaker 1Right, yeah, I don't know.
Favorite Moments and Episode Analysis
Speaker 2I was watching these episodes on YouTube. Episodes on YouTube and in the previously on for muffin Buffalo.
Speaker 1Yes.
Speaker 2They showed the scene of Jay and Eric at the falls from barrel pair. Oh did they? Yeah, oh, wow. So I feel like this was another one where they were swapped around.
Speaker 1Yeah.
Speaker 2Um, interesting, I'm pretty sure, because I was like wait, didn't I already see this previously on um, so I was confused, but I wish they hadn't done so much episode shuffling with this series. I feel like it might have done better if they hadn't I agree.
Speaker 1So what about this episode? Worked what didn't work, what didn't work, what didn't work? I think we talked a lot about what worked. Yeah, I think we've already talked about that the family dynamic. I think the writing has gotten much tighter and consistent.
Speaker 2Yeah, I actually really liked, I think, all of this. I think the what didn't work for me I already talked about, which is the way Mahandra reacted to her.
Speaker 1Yeah.
Speaker 2I just don't think it's. I don't think it's in character. I understand she's hurt. I understand she feels a certain way about Jay, but, like I don't know if, my best friend turned to me and said hey, I've been hearing these like inanimate objects talking to me and they were like dead serious about it, I'd listen. Right, and I mean they've known each other a long time, right. We're supposed to think. They went to school together, they grew up together, whatever. Why wouldn't you give them the benefit of the doubt?
Speaker 1Give her the benefit of the doubt, like I said to me I see it as it's something so absurd that it sounds like she's.
Speaker 2It sounds like she is just making something up to avoid the topic.
Speaker 1Exactly, yeah, exactly right. That that's how I see it. Like I'm just I'm going to tell you the most absurd thing in the world, yeah, and it'd be like, okay, you're not ready to tell me, right, like there's, there's, there's, there's, there's, there's, no, there's no old jay, kind of normal jay and and between there's got to be something between the, the, between the truth, or what was normal jay and what is jay saying? Animals are talking to her, right, like there, there's got to be something, some truth, in between those two. So I think that's's how she sees it. It's just, you're telling me something so absurd that it's just the truth is somewhere in there, but you're not ready to tell me yet, right? But she actually is telling her the truth, yeah, 100%. And that's why it's like I think it's just too much to handle. I mean, aliens exist, but a lot of people aren't ready to hear that. Yeah.
Speaker 2Obviously.
Speaker 1Obviously, that's just facts. Clearly, I've seen enough episodes of X-Files to know that aliens exist. Please, anyway, all right then, any last thoughts on this episode of Barrel Bear? Any last thoughts on this episode of Barrel Bear?
Speaker 2I thought this was quite a casting coup and certainly better than Eddie. What's his name? Eddie K.
Speaker 1Eddie K Thomas. Yeah, rue McClanahan. Louise Fletcher. Louise Fletcher.
Speaker 2This is like an Oscar winner.
Speaker 1Yeah, and a Golden Girl, mm-hmm.
Speaker 2My God, this is like like this is some serious, like I was delighted to see room mcclanahan. That's some legit casting it really was um.
Speaker 1I mean, we had, uh, what's, what's her name?
Speaker 2um carrie preston which, which who's a great actress great actress.
Speaker 1she probably wasn't as well known at the time. No, definitely not, but those two should have been.
Speaker 2Yeah, for sure, oh, absolutely. I mean, this was years past.
Speaker 1One Flew.
Speaker 2Over the Cuckoo's Nest and Golden Girls.
Speaker 1That's why I loved Pushing Daisies with Swoozie Kurtz. And who was the other one I can't remember. I can't think of her name. I'm going to look it up right now, so bear with me.
Speaker 2Okay, so I'll just keep talking while you do that. Yep, and I mean, you know you also had Christian Chenoweth, who is basically just Broadway royalty and was at that point too.
Speaker 1No, you're absolutely right. Yeah, I mean, you had such a great cast. I mean Kai I mean Kai McBride was on. Oh gosh, yeah, love him. Susie Kurtz, christian Christian channel with. Um well, who was the other? Ellen green.
Speaker 2Yes.
Speaker 1Yes, she has some fantastic actors, like on that show Um.
Speaker 2I mean, she was Audrey, yes, in the film adaptation of little shop of horrors. She is amazing.
Speaker 1She is amazing, they all are amazing.
Speaker 2I mean one of my favorite episodes of pushing daisies, and now we've just gotten to another Brian Fuller show. But is the one where they're in the car singing Birdhouse in your Soul Like come on?
Casting Praise and Final Thoughts
Speaker 1I know Any parting thoughts for our audience of a few. Thank you.
Speaker 2A handful.
Speaker 1Thank you to all of you who are listening. We really appreciate it.
Speaker 2Yeah, seriously, I know we tease, but we love we tease, but love.
Speaker 1I don't think I have anything else. No, Again, the episodes. I think it was really interesting. It was interesting enough, motherfucker, interestingly enough, motherfucker. What I find interesting is that the episodes that aired were really inconsistent and really choppy.
Speaker 2And they started to really pick up steam afterwards. If the show had been given a chance, oh well, let's give it a thumbs up, thumbs down. I think I know what both of us are doing. I think we're definitely big thumbs up on this episode, so and I think I said this a few episodes ago.
Speaker 1Yes, I, I think the show is just generally better when it does include wonder falls yes like jay in her natural habitat, which is right now wonder falls correct I agree, yeah, when they try to do like other things like that, like the crime dog episode was a little, was a little, all over the place, yeah when they don't go to wonderfalls at all.
Speaker 2I feel like the episodes suffer for it.
Speaker 1Yeah, I agree again, again. I mean, that's your, that's your home base. You, I mean, kind of want to stick with that, yeah, which I, which I think they should have and they're doing now. So again, like I said, I think it's getting much better Agreed. All right. All right, then, wonderful. Well, thank you all for listening again. Check us out.
